Cotton is one of the most popular fabrics in the world. It is hugely versatile, either used alone or in a blend. It massively outsells all other fibres combined! It is the leading crop in America, and consumers know that fabrics made from cotton are comfortable, durable and look great.
Cotton is a natural fibre which comes from the seed pod of the cotton plant. It is used to make lots of different types of fabric. The fibre is hollow in the centre, an under a microscope looks like a twisted ribbon.
Cotton can be knitted or woven into cloth. The most common weaves for cotton are plain and twill weaves. A plain weave produced fabric like gingham, percale, chambray and broadcloth, whereas a twill weave is more durable and is often found in denim, khaki and gabardine. Satin weave is less common with cotton fibres as it is dressier, but is found in high shine cottons such as sateen.
